Senior Product Designer

Creative

Full-time, Boston MA

Who We Are

Maark is a strategic marketing and innovation agency for global companies. We help our clients define and articulate their vision, design new connected customer experiences, and develop applications at the intersection of where what’s possible meets what’s relevant.

Our team of designers work with relative autonomy on our respective accounts but support each other through collaborative feedback and guidance. We don’t believe in egos and instead look for designers who want to learn from their colleagues and share their skills so we all can make the best work of our careers. Learn more about our product design practice.

We’re headquartered in Boston, MA, but have a hybrid work model—two days a week in the office and three days from home. We’ve operated this way for the last five years and believe it gives us valuable face-time with each other and more time with our families and friends.

The Role

As a Senior Product Designer at Maark, you will contribute to the design of products on one of our larger accounts, executing on the product vision, iterating on the user experience, and designing scalable systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design products using all the tools in your toolbox —sketch, wireframe, design, prototype, animate—whatever you need to do to best convey the experience.

  • Develop the visual language, infusing the brand voice into the product experience and interface.

  • Perform and use research to inform your design decisions, sometimes working with research teams to help find insights.

  • Work in systems, maintaining and growing modular atomic libraries to benefit designers, engineers, and clients.

  • Collaborate with the engineering team, working to define a shared language and avoid “throwing things over the fence.”

  • Present your work to internal and external stakeholders, explaining why your design will be successful

  • Advocate for design, speaking to the value of user research, design systems, and design as a strategic differentiator.

  • Give honest design feedback to the designers, managers, and engineers on your team.

Qualifications

  • You’ve been working on digital products for 5+ years.

  • A portfolio that shows your mastery of design— typography, composition, and color, as well as your product design process.

  • You’ve shipped and launched several products either at an agency or as part of a product company.

  • You’re an excellent communicator, confident in presenting your solutions and process internally and to clients.

  • Experience running user interviews and usability tests.

  • Experience with (and an affinity for) Figma.

  • You know what’s possible to build on the web and what might be more difficult (and sometimes build some things yourself).

  • You care about designing accessible experiences for all users (and creating tools that help)

Even if you don’t hit 100% of these qualifications, we still encourage you to apply. We can work with you to help build some of these skills over time.

Spring Java Developer

Engineering

Full-time, Boston MA

At Maark, we are passionate about bringing innovation and advanced concepts to life and sweating every detail in order to create the best possible experience for our clients and their customers. We believe that every interaction and transaction a user has with a product should be designed and built to work for that individual.

The clients we work with span a host of industries - ranging from large financial institutions to telecoms to hospitality to bio-engineering. And the problems we solve for them range from highly animated, interactive frontends, to complex business rules on the backend, to IoT solutions that bridge digital and real worlds. We love diving into new subjects and researching our clients' businesses and look to work with people who are just as naturally curious.

This role is for a Spring Java developer or senior developer to come in and help with building one of our key financial data applications for major investment banking clients. It is a multi-tenanted RESTful Spring Boot application built on top of AWS EC2 instances. It uses Hibernate/JPA to communicate with a MySQL database, but we will be migrating the application to MongoDB in the future. Some parts of the REST API are implemented in GraphQL. We are interested in splitting the monolithic application into smaller services/microservices in Kubernetes and would welcome any experience in this area

There is a small but dedicated core team with a mix of frontend React and backend Spring Java developers, devops, project managers and QA. We practice facets of lean development with some agile practices. The application development has a roadmap and timelines that are driven by business and guided by the development team.

There is a lot of scope for the right candidate who is interested in investigating new technologies, learning new skills, and gaining experience in financial applications.

Requirements

  • 5+ years experience of building Spring Java applications, especially RESTful services

  • 3+ years of experience working with Hibernate/JPA

  • Some experience with discreet service/microservices architectures

  • Self-starter with strong leadership, analytical, and interpersonal skills

  • Proven understanding of MVC architecture.

  • Knowledge of database technology (MySQL, NoSQL)

  • Knowledge and experience with both Agile and Waterfall methods and flexibility to work with both as needed

  • Ability to work under pressure and manage tough situations in a rapid-paced environment

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent 5+ years work experience

Highly Desired

  •  Savvy understanding of UI/UX principles

  • Working knowledge of AWS

  • Kubernetes

  • Microservices

  • Financial services experience
